About John
Monte Goso, Galicia
When I was four years old, I started playing the piano and began composing for piano at around the age of fourteen. I was a withdrawn, sensitive child and It gave me an escape. It is a thread that has been running through my life even before memory. A good friend suggested that I add to this bio my background in mathematics (Logic) which really sprung from an almost desperate need to understand things. When I had a home in Mexico our little church lost our pastor and I offered to help in some way, so the new pastor asked me to preach. I was thinking to make the coffee, fold chairs and the like. At first, I couldn't imagine it, now I preach whenever I get the chance as a lay preacher and pulpit supply. And my favorite sermon is any that explains the love of God. Back about thirty years ago I saw a documentary on pilgrimages of the world and was introduced to the Camino in Spain. I was able to do the French Route in 2013 and discovered a new passion: Pilgrimage.
Now these years later I've walked over 1,200 miles across Spain in eight different treks covering four different routes. I've traveled to Ireland on three different pilgrimages: St. Patrick's Purgatory, Croagh Patrick and St. Finbarr's Path. I traveled to Scotland on pilgrimage to the Isle of Iona in 2022 and then went back to Ireland for my second attempt at the reek of Croagh Patrick. Storms stopped me both times.
Music was my escape when I was a child, and it stirs me again like it used to, and pilgrimage
gives me a way to separate myself from daily life to spend time with God.
It's joyful and restorative.
I retired to Spain in August 2023 and spend my time writing, working on music,
filming when I can ( trying my best to get better at the technical aspects of it )
and taking the odd pilgrimage trip as the opportunity presents itself.
I am currently living in the village of Collanzo in the mountains of Asturias.
